Authorized Health IT Professionals Completed ONC Cures Act Projects by the Deadline

As of December 31, 2022, certified health IT developers are required by the ONC Cures Act Final Rule to offer FHIR-based APIs to healthcare providers and patients.
Many updates to the Certification Program were mandated by the Cures Act Final Rule, and they will have lasting effects on interoperability for patients, clinicians, and developers.

To earn the ONC Healthcare IT Developer Certification, programmers must:

Improve healthcare provider and patient communication by implementing FHIR-based APIs;
Allow users to access consistent data elements as described by the United States Core Data for Interoperability (USCDI) at the version 1 level or higher;
Strengthen the accuracy and comprehensiveness of ePrescribing; Give people a look into how Certified Health IT Developers put their products through their paces in the real world with Real World Testing plans.

These new criteria make it easier for patients to access their health information from mobile devices and allow electronic health data to flow more freely between health IT systems.

Health information that can be accessed electronically is “the cornerstone of modern healthcare,” and APIs make this possible, according to a blog post by Rob Anthony of ONC. “It is heartening to see developments in Certified Health IT through API products and capabilities,” says one expert on the subject of interoperability.

Five Health IT Products certified to 170.315(g)(10) Standardized API for patient and population services were on the Certified Health IT Product List (CHPL) in early 2022, he said. Today, 253 products provide this capability, and the industry’s ability to innovate and use data to provide value in healthcare has never been higher.

An important part of the ONC’s certification requirements for standardised APIs is the ability to upgrade from API technology that has been certified to 170.315(g)(8) to FHIR-based APIs in 170.315(g) (10). additionally, by the end of 2022 (December 31), offer customers the latest certified API technology.

Providers in certain CMS payment programmes, such as the Merit-based Incentive Payment System, will benefit from these rules if they are able to successfully deploy and use FHIR-based APIs by September 30, 2023, as explained by Anthony.

Since the deadline for compliance has passed, he continued, “we will turn to monitoring adoption and conformance in deployed systems through Lantern, while actively engaging with the health IT industry to ensure that the nation’s 5,000 hospitals and 500,000+ clinicians with Cures Update technology can leverage FHIR-based APIs.”

Anthony said that throughout 2023, the ONC will keep everyone apprised of their progress towards meeting the mandates of the Cures Act Final Rule.
